Collect Quotes

The wisdom of the wise, and the experience of ages, may be preserved by quotation.

Issac D’Israeli

If you have read my articles, you know that I love using quotations from the world’s great philosophers. I never knew why I loved these as much as I do until one day I read a quotation that said- “A great quote contains a wealth of  wisdom in a single line.”

While reading, I often come across just the right quote, which contains the ideal answer to a challenge I am facing. I feel that the value of a great quote does lie in the fact that it contains a world of wisdom, wisdom that may have taken the author many years to arrive at, in a line or two.

Another effective way that I use quotes is to paste them in places where I know I will see them throughout the day, such as on my bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator door and the dashboard of my car. I love collecting fridge magnets with motivational quotes. Whenever I open the fridge door, I do read that quote out loud and feel a pump in my positive energy. If you wish to buy some cool and motivating fridge magnets you can buy them here.

In my journal, I have now collected hundreds of quotes from great leaders,  thinkers, poets and philosophers on subjects such as how to deal with hardships, the meaning of life, the value of self–improvement, the importance of helping others, the power of positive thoughts and what not!

This simple regime keeps me focused on what’s essential during busy times and positive during struggling times.

So why you need to collect quotes? That sounds plain stupid, isn’t it? But trust me I’ll tell you some of the powerful reasons to do it that might affect you positively and change your life for the better. Here are some of the reasons to collect quotes:

1. Transform Your Mood

Quotes have the power to improve our mental state promptly. Just like a good book or movie, quotes can reproduce strong emotions. They can inspire, motivate or make us laugh. Whenever you are feeling blue or defeated, just read an uplifting quote and see the change in your mood.

For instance, if you are feeling sad and suddenly you came across a quote from Walt Whitman that says:

Keep your face always towards the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you

How would you feel? I’m sure you’ll feel motivated and positive.

2. Opportunity to Know New Authors

You may already be a quotes collector, but let’s face the truth: quotes don’t replace good books. But being exposed to quotes from different or unknown authors can spark your inquisitiveness and make you read their works.

For example, I used to think Albert Einstein was only a genius in physics. It was only after knowing some of his quotes that I had the curiosity to read his book- The world as I see it, which includes his opinions on the meaning of life, ethics, science, society, religion, and politics. The below is one of the quotes from this book:

It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.

3. Effective Communication

Quotes have the highest wisdom consistency you can get in a single sentence. It is very rewarding to find a simple and concise quote that expresses one sentiment that you already feel but didn’t know how to express quite well.

Moreover, quotations provide a better way of saying things. They give you a more precise, memorable phrasing for an idea. So in other words you can express your thoughts effectively by using some quotes. As said by Julio Cortazar

In quoting others, we cite ourselves.

4. Chance to Know Other People Well

It’s said- you can know someone better by the books one reads, or by the music they listen to or by the friends one has. I would say that a quicker way to know people is by taking a look at the quotes they collect or share.

If you read just a few quotes from someone’s quote collection, you can already tell a lot about that person. I bet if you check some quotes from my own collection in this blog’s sidebar, you can quickly infer what kind of person I am, without having to spend much time having a conversation with me (lucky you!).

5. Makes You Optimistic

Last but not the least, inspirational quotes may instantaneously change your entire thought process, enlightening your energies towards positivity. So when the subconscious mind is constantly filled with positive affirmations or quotes, there is an uplift in your attitude and personality and you become a bit more optimistic.

The majority of inspirational sayings hardly even take up 10 to 20 seconds of your time. Yet, the messages they incorporate are huge, sufficient to motivate you for months if not years. I am sure you can recall at least one motivational quote you read several years ago. This is a very powerful inspiration.

I’m alive, motivated and ready to slay the day

So over the next few weeks, start your collection of quotations, words that you can keep referring to when you need some snap inspiration or advice about how to deal with those difficulties. Trust me, you’ll feel a zeal of positivity in your life that would be enough to handle any crisis you may face.
