Be A Good Listener

Most people don’t listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.

Stephen R. Covey

One of the deepest desires of every human being is to be understood, cherished and valued. Yet, in this fast-paced age, too many people believe that listening is nothing more than waiting for the other person to stop talking. And to make it worse, while that person is speaking, we often use that time to compose our response, rather than emphasising on the point being made.

Benefits of Being A Good Listener

Being a good listener is important for a myriad of reasons. Some of them are as follows:

1. Career Enhancement:

There’s the obviously practical side like you can’t do well academically if you don’t pay attention to instructions or you won’t keep a job if you ignore your boss’s orders. It helps establish positive working relationships with bosses, clients, as well as colleagues at work. Good listening can help us establish a good image and helps us better understand our responsibilities

2. Build Meaningful Relationships

Communication is the key to any relationship. Active and effective listening helps with communicating and as a result, leads to better relationships and friendship. Mutual exchange of thoughts really matters because taking the time to truly understand another’s point of view shows that you care about them. Being a good listener fosters meaningful relationships with those around you. Especially, with your partner. It makes them feel loved and appreciated.

3. Shows Maturity and Respect

It shows maturity and respect to the speaker or the other parties involved in the conversation. Constantly interrupting without listening never leads to a meaningful and enlightening conversation. It shows that you believe, Patience is a virtue. A good listener understands that language is a complicated method of transportation for thoughts and feelings. Your counterpart needs this pause because it’s not always easy to find the right words. It’s not a race.

4. Better Decision Making

Making decisions and judgments based on assumptions can cause problems like misunderstandings or misconceptions. By attentive and effective listening skills, you can make better decisions based on a more accurate understanding of a given situation.

5. Enhance The Learning Skills

The art of listening is about finding out what the speaker thinks about something. When people listen to one another, they learn from one another. A free flow of ideas that are truly listened to can lead to a place where people are constantly learning from each other

One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.

Bryant H. McGill

Last but not the least, We have two ears and one mouth for a reason: to listen twice as much as we speak. listening to others, and listening well, is important for your personal development because it expands your horizon.

“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.”

Dalai lama
